Plea for a society of reciprocity — How can we finally implement inclusion? A personal and political story.
When Hadija Haruna-Oelker became the mother of a disabled child in 2016, issues that often take place behind closed doors entered her life. Since then, she has been investigating why there is a lack of genuine participation for all children, why inclusion only exists on paper and why social Darwinist ideas are gaining strength in society.
From a Black, intersectional perspective, Hadija Haruna-Oelker traces untold stories and repressed crimes of the past. She looks at her growing son, convinced that childhoods hold the power to overcome divisions and speak the unsaid. As a non-disabled mother, she sees herself not only as an ally of her child. She is interested in socio-political reflection as a whole, a change of perspective and an accessible understanding of human rights. And last but not least, a society of reciprocity in which everyone can live self-determined lives.
