Utopia, modernism, punk, subversion, war and a bunch of questions
A musical trip by balkaNet e.V. through the Yugoslavian past into the here & now
YUdéjàVU is a journey through the pop culture of Yugoslavia from 1950 to the present day. Before the collapse of Yugoslavia, the society of the non-aligned multi-ethnic state was steeped in subversive ideas: Punk rock and avant-garde were not a marginal phenomenon here, but mainstream. How could a society characterised by awakening and tangible utopias slide into war and genocide? And what do these questions do to the survivors? The Munich-based group balkaNet e.V. brings together people from different population groups in the former Yugoslavia. Those who organise there believe in overcoming nationalism and in the utopia of multi-religious and non-religious coexistence. Nevertheless, they all need a lifetime to understand what happened back then.
YUdéjàVu approaches the answers in an unconventional, personal and approachable way, based on the history of the Yugoslav pop and rock scene. It survived the collapse of the state. As a result, the music took on a trans-Yugoslavian identity and spread throughout the world in diasporic contexts. Let us now let it resound in the Werkraum of the Münchner Kammerspiele. Because it tells us far more about our present than we realise.
