In the second edition of his new series, philosopher, journalist and author Michel Friedman invites the German-Croatian writer Jagoda Marinić to a discussion. The topic: home - even though Jagoda Marinić doesn’t like to answer the question of home herself. “I’d rather link the experiences I have in the world to my life,” she says, a European and citizen of the world. Nevertheless, on 4 November she will be reflecting with Friedman on a concept that already opened up spaces of longing for Eichendorf and has become increasingly politicized in recent decades.

Jagoda Marinić studied political science, German and English literature in Heidelberg. She has been publishing award-winning novels, essays and short stories since 2001. In her stories, she gives a voice to people who are constantly searching, not always because they want to, but often because the narrow patterns of society make them do so. Her characters move in this balancing act between self-determination and heteronomy. They deal with freedom, explore what it means, where it comes from and where it leads. Underneath the stories, there is always the question of whether this is not the task of every human life: the search for a place in the world.

In addition to essays and stories, Marinić writes theater reviews and writes for the Frankfurter Rundschau, the taz and the Süddeutsche Zeitung. Since January 2022, she has written a fortnightly column in Stern. Since May 2021, Jagoda Marinić has hosted the ARD podcast “Freiheit Deluxe.” In 2023, Marinić took over the artistic direction of the Heidelberg International Literature Festival. On 09.10. her new book “Sanfte Radikalität. Between hope and change”.
