“If I had an arm, I’d put it around you.” - A little robot dog

How do we deal with death and loss? What space does grief occupy in our society? And how can compassion be expressed? A resident has died in the house at the end of the street. The neighborhood gathers to divide up the household goods left behind. Stories and memories gather around the things, a life that no longer exists. Unable to admit their grief over the loss or express their sympathy to the bereaved, the residents become increasingly entangled in confused stories. Even the little robot dog that is found in the estate and sent out by a company to help them cope with grief is unable to help them come to terms with the unpleasant and hopeless feeling of loss.

“Gigantische Einsamkeit” is s play about death and the commercialization of grief. About a machine that claims a feeling and a society that struggles to find its own.

The Werkraum is increasingly dedicated to young voices in literature and the promotion of young talent and brings together exceptional theatre makers. The author Paula Kläy (*1997 in Zurich) studied Scenic Writing at the Berlin University of the Arts. Her play “Oberland” received the Munich Audience Award at the Long Night of New Drama 2023. “Gigantische Einsamkeit” was created during the residency in Munich, where the director Rosa Rieck also became aware of the play. Rosa Rieck (*1994 in Hamburg) has been studying Scenic Writing at the Berlin University of the Arts since 2018. In 2023, she was nominated for Münchner Förderpreis für neue Dramatik with her author collective DIEZEN kollektiv. Since 2020, she has also been studying drama directing at the HfS Ernst Busch. “Gigantische Einsamkeit” is her diploma production.
