A person of consequence has died, someone who got it right and made a lot of money with his occupation: he was a funeral director. He could fulfil your every wish, provided it was paid for. The funeral music is already being rehearsed. But then it raises its head, anyway: an ugly row about the estate. Those in contention: the ex-wife, the young widow, a lawyer and employees of the honourable company. A sadly funny evening, rich in music, about how we deal with death and the business end of dying.

Digital introduction

Press reviews

“Hilarious: Gerhard Polt and the Well brothers celebrate life at the Münchner Kammerspiele with “A scheene Leich” - and ponder mortality.

The house is naturally full when Gerhard Polt performs at the Kammerspiele. Polt is a force of nature in Bavaria…”

Süddeutsche Zeitung • 29.1.23

“It’s comforting that Polt doesn’t change and, as always, calmly and protectively outshines the characters he embodies. His showpiece character is the philistine who doesn’t understand the unfamiliar and makes fun of it for that very reason, the provincial who is incapable of mentally traveling to a place where he himself is not already sitting.”

Die Zeit • 9.2.23

“When the Well Brothers play and sing their punch lines (”Carpe diem dear people!“), when Polt makes his pointed pauses (”I am a humanist … From the old Schalg”) and thus exposes everyone he satirizes, and when the amateur chorus actors join in this deliciously back-stabbing funeral feast with great enthusiasm, everyone enjoys it. “Thank you for the beautiful sound”, says a beaming Polt to the cheering audience at the end. This humor is immortal.”

Münchner Merkur • 30.1.23

“When Polt steps up to the stage alone and philosophizes about remembering, gaps in memory or legacies, you are completely with him and with yourself. Because earlier Polt Well performances are stored in the memory, along with everything else that was there at the time. Towards the end, Polt is the only guest at the funeral feast to eat soup. He spooned and spooned. Oh, if only it could go on like this forever.”

Abendzeitung • 30.1.23

“A routinely entertaining evening with a touching ending. Gerhard Polt also satirizes business-speak, because funerals are also a business. In between, the Well brothers tell anecdotes about when they used to sing at funerals as children. Ruedi Häusermann tries to lure not only the audience but also Polt and the Well brothers out of their comfort zone. There are little melancholy Marthaler’isms. ‘Polt remains Polt, of course, his strength is philosophizing’.”
