E. L. James is the pen name of the British best-selling author Erika Leonard who was born in London in 1963. After having worked in television for 25 years it is said that James decided to write stories with which readers would fall in love. The result is “Fifty Shades of Grey”, a trilogy that has achieved worldwide fame; it was sold more than 125 million times globally and translated into 52 languages. The books deal with the erotic relationship between the young literature student Ana and the billionaire Christian Grey, which is marked by power games and BDSM practices. The first volume led the Spiegel magazine best seller list for 147 consecutive weeks; its film adaptation which was released in the movie theaters in February 2015 broke all records worldwide. E. L. James lives in West London with her husband, the author and screenwriter Niall Leonard, and their two sons.
