NEWS FROM THE WORLD OF TELEVISION SERIES WITH JULIA VON HEINZ AND MATTHIAS DELL
Under the title “Episode”, experts and theorists from the film magazine “Cargo”, together with alternating guests, present a TV series for discussion. The director and screenwriter Julia von Heinz, a professor at the HFF in Munich, talks to the film critic Matthias Dell about “Orange is the New Black”. The central character of the series, distributed by Netflix, is Piper Chapman, a cosmetics industry manager – a successful, classically beautiful, bisexual woman. Her career is rudely interrupted when she is imprisoned for 15 months for an offence that she committed ten years ago. While at college she tried to smuggle a suitcase of drug money for her partner at the time, Alex. The action is continually interrupted by flashbacks. These tell the backstories of the individual characters up until Piper’s imprisonment.
